The Ocala Drive-In Theatre, a beloved local institution and one of only four remaining drive-in movie theaters in Florida, has been listed for sale with an asking price of $1,799,900.
Property Details
The 11.6-acre property is located at 4850 S. Pine Avenue (U.S. Highway 441) in south Ocala. According to Ocala-News.com, the commercial parcel offers more than 920 feet of frontage along the busy U.S. 441 corridor. The property is zoned B-4 for heavy regional business, which allows for potential uses including retail shopping centers, self-storage facilities, warehouses, multifamily apartments, or mixed-use developments.
The existing site includes an owner's suite apartment, concession and projection facilities, and several covered pole barns that have historically housed weekend flea market vendors alongside the outdoor theater screens.
A Local Landmark
The theater has operated as one of only a handful of remaining drive-in venues across the state of Florida, drawing moviegoers for decades with double features under the stars. Across the entire country, only a few hundred drive-in theaters remain in operation. According to WCJB, the Ocala Drive-In is one of the last four drive-in movie theaters in Florida.
"This place has been pronounced dead before and it keeps getting up off the slab," wrote the Ocala Gazette. The theater opened in 1948 as Dyers Drive-In and has survived two previous closures before being resurrected each time.
John Watzke and his brother Charlie bought the theater in 2011, remodeled it, and brought it back to life. The Ocala Gazette called it the "Lazarus of Florida drive-in theaters."
Community Response
The news has drawn an outpouring of support from the community. Local residents are being encouraged to visit the theater while it remains open. The Ocala Gazette urged readers: "GO TO THE DRIVE-IN! Take your kids. Make it a date night. Grab some popcorn and enjoy something that so few communities still have."
The drive-in has survived television, home video, the VCR, the DVD, streaming, two shutdowns, and seven decades of Florida weather. It can survive all of that. The one thing it cannot survive is indifference.
Nothing has officially closed, and the owner says the theater remains open for business. A theater that has come back from the dead twice may still have a fighting chance at a third act.
